Eco Sheep Information

Eco Sheep 1

Stonesheep

The Tirolean Stonesheep (Tiroler Steinschaf) is one of the oldest existing sheep species on earth. These sheep have been bred on remote mountain farms for centuries in Tirol for their meat, milk, and wool. Their wool was in high demand especially in the 20th century to produce loden cloth. Today, the Tirolean Stonesheep is a rare species. The estimated Austrian population is around 4,000 sheep, and 14,000 worldwide. This clog is part of our Species Preservation Initiative and helps support this rare breed.

Eco Sheep 2

Shetland

Shetland sheep are native to the Shetland Islands in Scotland. The breed traces its roots to the ancient Nordic heather sheep and has been recorded in history since the Stone Age. The wool of the Shetland Sheep is very high quality with a high level of elasticity. Once a year, in the springtime, the sheep shed their wool. At that time the wool can be easily loosened and detached without shearing, but rather by picking it.This clog is part of our Species Preservation Initiative and helps support this rare breed.

Eco Sheep 3

Juraschaf

The Juraschaf is native to Switzerland and spends most of its life in the Alps. The breed is popular in Switzerland and its wool is in high demand for its high quality, dark color and fine fiber structure. It is well known for its ability to thrive in tough alpine conditions. Raw wool ranges from dark brown to completely black. When blended for our clogs, it produces a rich, deep espresso brown. Juraschaf wool is soft and fine, with all the wonderful natural insulating properties of alpine sheep wool. This clog is part of our Species Preservation Initiative and helps support this rare breed.

Eco Sheep 4

Alpaca

Alpaca is a well-known wool producer and is raised all around the world. The wool we use is from the Peruvian Alpaca, which is native to the Andes in South America. Their wool is highly prized for being softer and silkier than cashmere, yet very durable and warm. Our wool is called "baby alpaca" and is sourced from a Fair Trade Certified & Cruelty Free Collective. "Baby Alpaca" does not refer to the age of the alpaca, but rather the grade of the wool - Baby being the finest and softest.

Eco Sheep 5

Coburg Fox Sheep

The Coburg Fox sheep is a robust breed native to Germany. The speciality of this wool is its reddish-brown colour. When lambs are born, their color can be from goldish yellow to reddish brown, which can appear golden. Over the years it brightens up but it always keeps its reddish-brown or golden shimmer. There are currently only a few thousand Coburg sheep in existence. The wool is a medium gauge that is both soft and hardy, making it ideal for felting.

    Quality

I bought these to wear as a slipper. This is a quality shoe. It was tight on my foot when I first put them on. You need to wear them a bit and let them relax. I typically wear a wide width so it is taking a little time for them to adjust to my foot, but, I’ve no doubt given a little time, they are going to be my go to shoe.

Staff Review - 5 Year Check In...Still Going Strong and Bringing the Comfort

I've owned these Alpaca clogs for 5 years now and have been wearing them almost daily, so they've seen a lot of miles. I live in Portland, Oregon and these have been through it all - they're my pre and apres ski shoes, my errands in the rain shoes; they've been on the beach, worn around the house and pretty much every neighborhood establishment at one time or another. I also love traveling with them because nothing beats this comfort after a long day of walking in other shoes.

You can see they've held up amazingly well and most of the tread is still there. The only potential issue I see is the wool getting thinner around my toes at the end of the toe box - which is entirely my fault for clawing them with my toe nails as I almost always wear these barefoot. Pro Tip - Trim your toe nails regularly and your clogs will last longer!

I could not be happier with how well these have held up - with absolutely ZERO maintenance. I haven't even brushed or cleaned these, which I should, but I'm lazy. They still smell like wool, not feet, and they've molded to my foot shape beautifully. I'm looking forward to many more comfortable years with them.

    My loyalty is flipped!

I have purchased several pairs of similar wool clogs over the years from a company that rhymes with Shaflinger. I was unhappy with the last pair purchased, the fit felt different, harder sole and more narrow. I decided to give Stegmann a try and so happy I did. I purchased the Stonesheep and I love the color and that the upper is one piece of wool, smooth and seamless. The clogs are super comfy, the width is perfectly ample but not overly, and they look minimalist and cool . True to size. The wool keeps you toasty but self regulates, so doesn’t get sweaty like sheepskin/sheep wool fleece slippers can. Couldn’t be happier, you have a new fan and loyal customer.
